Feeding wild birds is one of the most popular pastimes in the United States. The country's estimated number of bird feeding enthusiasts is said to number as many as 65 million people.
Oilseeds International's safflower is a valuable nutritional food source for wild birds due to its protein and high oil content. The oil content of our safflower—typically 35-40%—also makes it a key source of energy. This is important because birds have a high body temperature and a high rate of metabolism, traits that require birds to consume food volumes that, for some species, can be in excess of 50% of their body weight per day. High-energy seeds such as safflower enable birds to survive on relatively smaller amounts of food. Consuming high-energy safflower is especially important during cold weather and when adult birds are raising their young.
Bird watchers have observed that many of their favorite songbirds and feeder birds will readily eat safflower seed and, in fact, seem to prefer it. Less desirable species such as starlings, grackles, and blackbirds are not drawn to the bitter taste of the safflower seed. Similarly, squirrels and many other mammals also dislike the bitterness of the safflower seed.
Oilseeds' safflower seeds have thin, small shells that require minimal cleanup, making it an excellent choice for window feeders and on patios and decks.
